Police investigates alleged murder of woman at Sangwali

The police in the Zambezi region are investigating the alleged murder of Namakaliza Sitali (28), who was found dead on Saturday morning at Sangwali village.

According to police spokesperson for the Zambezi region and head of community policing inspector Kisco Sitali, the deceased’s body was discovered in her boyfriend’s residential courtyard by a woman who had gone to fetch water there.

“The deceased was found lying on her back with a cut wound on the throat and chest inflicted by what is believed to be a sharp object,” says the spokesperson.

Sitali adds that preliminary police investigations revealed that the deceased was the girlfriend of a cattle herder who lives alone in the mentioned village courtyard.

“The deceased had left her village, Masikamu in the Sangwali area, the previous day (Friday) to visit her boyfriend. During investigation inside the house of the deceased’s boyfriend, blood spots were observed, which suggested the crime took place inside the house before the deceased fell outside and died,” Sitali says.

The police found an axe and a saw inside the house with blood stains, along with a Zambian identification card allegedly belonging to the deceased’s boyfriend, which was also seized, he adds.

The community police of the Sangwali area tracked down the deceased’s boyfriend, who is now a suspect. He was found hanging from an electric pole on Saturday, having allegedly been electrocuted in an attempted self-harming incident.

The suspect (26) sustained burns to his arms and back but is reported to be in stable condition after he was rushed to Choi Clinic and later transferred to Katima Mulilo State Hospital.

The body of the deceased has been transported to the Katima Mulilo State Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Her next of kin have been informed of her death.
Police investigations into the matter continue.
